Description

This has probably been done before, but I don't care. I got inspired for this by reading +Anima; I didn't want to get a totally historically accurate Old West setting, but just a general Old West feel with fantasy elements, like +Anima has. This picture evolved alot as it went: Toph, Appa, and Momo weren't there in the initial sketch, then I thought how I'd never really fully drawn Toph and added her, then how Appa is half buffalo and buffalos are very Western and added him, and then that something should be in the lower left and added Momo. Redesigning the animals was fun, with Appa and the ostrich-horse I just really emphasized one half of the hybrid (with Appa eliminating the manatee altogether and just making him a buffalo,) and with Momo I completely changed him into a new hybrid: prairie dog and jack rabbit. This is rather second season, which fits best with Old Westness, having as it does the two very Old West episodes Zuko Alone and The Chase.

Anyway, I first did a brown ink wash over the whole thing to give it an old, sepia tone, and wanted that to remain the most substantial aspect of the coloring job, with the different colors more as tints, like a colorized old photograph or something. I did them in colored pencil (which I had to borrow from ~eightcrows and she was watching me like a hawk the whole time) for the texture. I'm happy; it has the feel I wanted.

Actually, Avatar: The Last Airbender has that precise level of technology. Steam ships and metal tanks make up the technology available at the Old West as well as in Victorian England, which are basically the same age.  Legend of Korra featured the next level of technology.

Funny because that world never had firearms.
